Why play bowls?

Bowling is an anaerobic type of physical exercise, that helps in burning calories and works muscle groups not usually exercised. The flexing and stretching in bowling works tendons, joints, ligaments, and muscles in the arms and promotes weight loss. [Wikipedia]

During an average game you will:

•    Bend more than 40 times.

•    Walk approximately 1,260 metres.

•    Swing your arm more than 40 times to deliver a bowl weighing more than three pounds.

Bowls can be enjoyed at any age and so is the perfect game for the whole family.

What should you wear?

When you first start to bowl at Banister Park, or are playing an informal non-competitive game - the dress code is smart casual (no jeans). You should wear flat shoes.

For organised bowling, there are two codes of dress, known as “Greys” or “Whites”.

Greys - grey trousers/skirts and white above the waist.

Whites - white trousers/skirts and white above the waist.

Regulation brown, grey or white bowling shoes must be worn.

Buying bowling equipment

You can buy bowling equipment, clothing, shoes and accessories from a range of bowls suppliers. Suppliers visit the club - known as a roadshow - on a regular basis.

Make sure that you take advice before buying bowls. It is important that you play with the correct size and weight for you. There are many manufacturers to choose from. Most bowlers start with second hand bowls and there is a notice board in the Club where members can advertise equipment for sale.

Club shirts, jackets, jumpers and waistcoats are available to buy from the club.

Lockers are available to store bowls, shoes etc, at a cost of just £5 per year..
